Máirtín Ó Maoláin - Physician
Short Bio
My name is Máirtín Ó Maoláin. I am a GP working as an Examining Physician for Spirasi. I also lecture with the GP department in RCSI. I am from Galway city. I completed my undergraduate medical training and postgraduate clinical education training in NUIG. I did my specialist GP training with the Western Training Programme which is based out of Galway city. I am a member of the Ethics Committee of the Medical Council too.

Fun Fact
I have been known to write an occasional song while playing the guitar! Recordings do exist. I also dabble in writing the odd poem.
I like a run, a hike and yoga. Tá grá agam don Ghaeilge agus is breá liom í a labhairt!

What attracted you to your role at Spirasi?
I was eager to contribute to the care and treatment of victims of torture, most of whom are international protection applicants.
I was aware that this group is marginalised due to their asylum status, accommodation in direct provision, and language and cultural barriers, and wanted to make use of the skills and knowledge I had gained during my training and time working in the Irish healthcare system to help them as best I could in their rehabilitation.

What are the challenges and rewards of your job?
The stories that our clients bravely share with us are often harrowing and tragic, which can be challenging. Communication can sometimes be challenging, but this is often overcome with the support of interpreters hired by Spirasi. Giving clients the time, respect and safety that they deserve during our meetings is very rewarding. Clients appreciate this time and attention we give during their assessments. Working with a team of dedicated, kind, generous, supportive, conscientious and committed individuals throughout the organisation is also very rewarding.
